Cluster of Projects Proposes Environmental Efficiency Metrics for Data Centres
November 28, 2014
RenewIT is one of six European Union-funded projects in a cluster with the global aim of increasing the use of renewable energy sources, heat reuse, smart grids and energy efficiency in Data Centres. These projects were all created from a call for projects issued as part of the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). Call ICT-2013.6.2, “Data Centres in an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly Internet“, was part of the EC’s Smart Cities research funding. The Cluster also includes two earlier projects, All4Green and CoolEmAll. Together, the projects include over 50 partners.
A core focus of the Cluster is to develop new and existing metrics for environmental efficiency. This will enable the Cluster to measure variables in common, compare results, and collectively support the development of standards.
At a workshop in Brussels on 10th September 2014, the cluster released a document with the proposed new metrics. This document can be found here.
